The short answer: a good sunglasses lens does three jobs — blocks 100% of UV light (look for the UV400 mark), cuts the right amount of visible light for your situation (lens category 2–3 for everyday use), and optionally kills reflected glare (polarization). Everything else — color, gradient, mirror coating — is about comfort and style, not safety.
