The short answer: yes — dark lenses without a real UV filter are worse than wearing nothing. In bright light your pupils naturally constrict, limiting how much UV enters. Behind a dark tint, your pupils relax and open wide. If that tint is not paired with UV filtering, your wide-open pupils receive more UV than they ever would in bare sunlight.
The mechanism, step by step
- Bright day: bare pupils constrict to roughly 2 mm — a built-in defense.
- You put on dark, uncoated lenses: visible light drops, comfort improves.
- Your pupils dilate to 4–6 mm because the world looks dim.
- UV, which the tint does not block, now enters through an opening several times larger.
Comfort goes up, protection goes down — the most treacherous trade in eyewear.
Where these lenses come from
Untested market-stall pairs, novelty sunglasses, costume glasses, and some marketplace listings with decorative "UV" stickers. The tint itself is trivially cheap to produce; the UV filter is a separate step some factories simply skip. You cannot see the difference — which is the whole problem with unverified cheap sunglasses.
The fix
Only wear tinted lenses marked UV400 or 100% UVA/UVB — and buy from anyone who can say how the claim was verified. An optician can also test any existing pair in seconds, free.

Can I add UV protection to lenses that lack it?

Less so — a light tint barely dilates pupils, so you are roughly at bare-eye risk. Still pointless: the same money buys real protection.
