How the polarized screen test works

LCD screens create their image behind a built-in polarizing layer, so every bit of light they emit is polarized in one direction. A polarized lens is a second filter set to block light polarized the other way. Line the two up and light passes; cross them at 90 degrees and they cancel, so the screen dims or goes black. That crossing point is the whole test \\u2014 and a filter that produces it cannot be faked with a printed label.

Does this test prove my sunglasses have UV protection?

No. It only confirms the polarizing filter. UV protection is a separate coating \\u2014 look for a UV400 or 100% UVA/UVB mark, and read polarized vs UV protection for the difference.

Why do my polarized sunglasses black out my phone?

My glasses said polarized but the panel did not change. Were they mislabeled?

Are polarized lenses worth buying?
