- City days that move indoors and out. Terrace lunch, then a shop, then the street — a solid category 3 lens forces you to take glasses off indoors; a gradient forgives.
- Style. The fade shows your eyes while still reading as sunglasses — the reason gradients rule editorial fashion frames.
Where they lose
- Water and snow. Glare comes from below off the surface — exactly where a gradient is weakest. Choose a full-tint polarized lens there.
- All-day harsh sun. The lighter lower zone lets bottom-up brightness in; full tints rest your eyes more at the beach.
Gradient + everything else
Gradient is only a tint pattern — it stacks freely with UV400 (non-negotiable, and independent of tint), polarization, and mirror coatings. A gradient lens without UV400 has the same problem as any unprotected dark lens: skip it.
