The short answer: Photochromic lenses, often called transition lenses, hold a dye that darkens when ultraviolet light hits it and clears when the UV fades. One pair works as clear glasses indoors and as sunglasses outside. The catch: most darken over a minute, react less in hot weather, and barely tint inside a car, because the windshield blocks the UV that triggers them.
How the tint reacts
Special molecules sit inside or on top of the lens. In UV light they change shape and absorb more visible light, so the lens goes dark. Out of UV, they relax and the lens clears. Speed, and the temperature effect
Darkening takes under a minute. Clearing back to full transparency takes longer, often several minutes, which is why you step into a shop and stay shaded for a bit. Temperature matters too. The molecules react harder in the cold and less in summer heat, so the same lens looks darker on a ski slope than on a hot beach.

From our test bench. We time each pair from clear to dark and back at two temperatures. In cool air, our samples reached sunglass darkness in about 45 seconds and needed close to three minutes to clear. In summer heat they topped out a shade lighter. Behind a windshield, none passed a light tint. The technology is real. The physics sets the limits.
