What Your Prescription Controls

Your prescription decides the correction; you decide almost everything else about the lens, and those choices shape comfort, thickness, and clarity every day. There are three big decisions: vision type, material and thickness, and coatings. Get those right and the lens disappears into good vision.

Vision Type: Single Vision or Progressive

Start here, because it depends on what you need corrected.

Material and Thickness

A higher index of refraction bends light more, so a strong prescription can be ground thinner and lighter. Match the index to your prescription strength.

1.57–1.59 Mild to moderate; polycarbonate for impact
1.60–1.67 Moderate to strong
1.74 Strong prescriptions, the thinnest common lens

Coatings change how the lens performs. Two are worth it for most people; the rest are preference.

Special Lenses

A

Photochromic

Darken outdoors and clear indoors, so one pair does both. They barely darken behind a car windshield. See photochromic lenses explained.

Prism

You drive at night

Frequently Asked Questions

Which lens coating is most worth it?

Anti-reflective. It cuts glare from headlights and screens and sharpens night vision, so you feel it every day. A good AR coating usually includes scratch resistance too.

Do I need high-index lenses?

Only if your prescription is strong. High-index thins and lightens a strong lens, but for mild prescriptions standard lenses stay thin enough and cost less.

Are progressives worth it over bifocals?

For screen work and a line-free look, yes. Progressives add the middle distance bifocals miss. Bifocals give a wider reading zone at a lower price.

Is a blue light coating necessary?

No. There is no evidence it protects your eyes or reduces strain. The anti-reflective coating is what makes screen work more comfortable.

Can prescription lenses be sunglasses too?
