Glasses Lens Coatings Explained: AR, Scratch, UV, Blue Light

The short answer: Lens coatings are thin layers added to a lens to change how it performs. The ones worth paying for are anti-reflective, which cuts glare, and scratch-resistant, which protects the surface. UV protection should be built in already. Hydrophobic coatings shed water and smudges. Blue light and mirror coatings are optional, chosen for preference, not necessity.

What a coating is

A coating is a microscopically thin layer bonded to the lens that adds a property the bare lens lacks: less reflection, more scratch resistance, water repellency, or a touch of light control. Most quality lenses stack several. Knowing what each does helps you pay for the ones you will feel and skip the ones you will not.

The two that matter most

Anti-reflective is the coating you will notice every day: fewer headlight halos at night, less screen glare, and eyes visible in photos. It is worth it for almost anyone; see anti-reflective coating. Scratch resistance protects your investment, and a good AR coating usually includes a scratch layer. UV protection is non-negotiable, but on most modern lenses it is already built in rather than added on.

The optional ones

Hydrophobic coatings make lenses easier to clean and quicker to shed rain, a genuine convenience. A hydrophobic top layer wiped clean in one pass where a plain lens smeared. A blue filter changed the tint but not the fatigue. If you add one coating, make it AR. If two, add scratch resistance.
