How to Clean Wooden Sunglasses Without Ruining Them

The short answer: Clean wooden sunglasses with a barely damp, soft cloth and a drop of mild soap if needed, then dry them right away. Never soak them, never use alcohol or harsh cleaners, and keep them out of hot cars. Wipe the lenses separately with lens spray and a microfiber cloth. An occasional light wood oil keeps the finish from drying out.

Why wood needs different care

Wood is porous and finished with a seal, so it behaves nothing like acetate or metal. Water can seep in at unsealed spots, harsh chemicals strip the finish, and heat warps and cracks the frame. The goal with wood is gentle and dry: clean the surface without soaking it, and protect the seal that keeps moisture out. Our guide on whether wooden sunglasses are waterproof explains the limits.

Step by step

  • Wipe the frame. Use a soft cloth barely dampened with water. For grime, add a tiny drop of mild soap.
  • Dry immediately. Pat the wood dry with a clean cloth; do not let water sit on it.
  • Clean the lenses separately. Lens spray and a microfiber cloth, the same as any lens; see cleaning without scratching.
  • Condition now and then. A tiny amount of natural wood or linseed oil, buffed in, revives a dry finish.

What to avoid

Do not soak wooden frames or hold them under a running tap. Skip alcohol, ammonia, glass cleaner, and abrasive wipes, which strip the seal and dull the wood. Keep them off a hot dashboard, since heat is what warps and cracks wood fastest. And do not wipe the lenses with your shirt or a paper towel, which scratches any lens.

Storing wooden frames

Store wooden sunglasses in a hard case, away from heat and from long humidity. A hard case prevents the knocks and scratches that chip a wood finish, and it keeps the frame from sitting in a hot, damp bag. For the general rules, see how to store sunglasses. Well cared for, a sealed wooden frame lasts for years.

From our test bench. We clean wooden frames the wrong way on purpose to see what happens. A quick alcohol wipe dulled the finish and raised the grain. A damp-cloth-and-dry routine kept a test frame looking new, and a light oil brought back a dry one. The rule that mattered most: dry it immediately. Standing water is what lifts a wood seal.
