What Is the Average Pupillary Distance (PD)?

The short answer: For adults, the average pupillary distance (PD) is about 63 mm, and most people fall between 54 and 74 mm. Women average a little lower, around 60 to 62 mm, and men a little higher, around 63 to 65 mm. Children are lower, often 41 to 55 mm. Your own PD is what matters for glasses, because it centers the lenses over your pupils.

What PD is

Pupillary distance is the space between the centers of your two pupils, measured in millimeters. It tells the lab where to place the optical center of each lens so you look through the clearest part. Get it wrong and you can feel strain or blur, especially with stronger prescriptions.

Average PD by group

Group Typical average Common range
Adult men ~63–65 mm 60–70 mm
Adult women ~60–62 mm 55–65 mm
All adults ~63 mm 54–74 mm
Children ~50 mm 41–55 mm

These are general figures, not a substitute for your own measurement. Single-vision glasses use one distance PD; some lenses use a near PD or a separate number for each eye.

Why the average is only a guide

Averages are useful for a rough sense of scale, but glasses are made to your eyes, not to a population. Two people with the same face width can have different PDs, and using an average instead of your real number can leave the lenses slightly off-center. For low prescriptions the effect is small; for strong ones it matters more.

How to find yours

You can measure PD at home with a mirror and a ruler, or have an optician measure it. Many prescriptions include it; if yours does not, it is quick to do. See how to measure your PD at home, or use our tool.

Measure with the PD Ruler →

From our test bench. We treat the average as a sanity check, not an input. If a measured PD comes in far outside 54 to 74 mm, we re-measure, because a slipped ruler is more likely than a truly unusual PD. For the actual order, only the person's own measured number goes on the lens.

FAQ

What is a normal PD for adults?

About 63 mm on average, with most adults between 54 and 74 mm. Men average slightly higher and women slightly lower, but your own measured number is what counts.

What is the average PD for women and men?

Women average around 60 to 62 mm and men around 63 to 65 mm. These are guides only; individual PDs vary within each group.

Can I use an average PD to order glasses?

It is better to use your own. An average can leave the lenses slightly off-center, which matters more for stronger prescriptions. Measuring your real PD takes only a minute.
